Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to commonly asked questions about our service

What is StolenMotorJA?

StolenMotorJA is Jamaica's central database for stolen motor vehicles. Our platform allows anyone to check if a vehicle has been reported stolen before purchasing it, and for owners to report their stolen vehicles to increase chances of recovery.

Is this service free?

Yes, all our services are completely free for everyone. This includes checking vehicles, reporting stolen vehicles, and receiving notifications. We believe in maintaining this as a public service to combat vehicle theft in Jamaica.

Is this an official government service?

No, StolenMotorJA is not affiliated with the Jamaican government or police force. We are an independent non-profit initiative. However, we work alongside law enforcement when appropriate to help recover stolen vehicles.

Do I still need to report a theft to the police?

Absolutely! StolenMotorJA is a supplement to, not a replacement for, official police reports. Always report vehicle theft to your local police station first, then add your vehicle to our database as an additional measure.

How do I check if a vehicle is stolen?

Simply enter the chassis number (VIN) or engine number in the search form on our homepage. The system will instantly tell you if the vehicle matches any in our stolen vehicle database.

Where can I find the chassis/VIN number?

The chassis number (also called a VIN) is typically found:

  • On the vehicle registration document
  • Inside the driver's door jamb
  • Under the hood, near the firewall
  • At the base of the windshield on the driver's side
  • On the vehicle's insurance documents

Is my search confidential?

Yes. While we do keep records of searches for statistical purposes, your personal information is not stored. If the vehicle you search for matches a stolen record, the original reporter may receive an anonymous notification that someone has searched for their vehicle.

If a vehicle is not in your database, does that mean it's not stolen?

Not necessarily. Our database only contains vehicles that have been reported to us. There may be stolen vehicles that have not been reported to StolenMotorJA. We always recommend performing due diligence when purchasing a used vehicle, including checking with the Tax Office to verify ownership.

How do I report my vehicle as stolen?

Click on the "Report Car Stolen" link in the navigation menu and fill out the form with your vehicle details. You'll need the chassis number, engine number, and other information about your vehicle. After submission, your vehicle will be added to our database.

What information do I need to report a stolen vehicle?

You'll need:

  • Chassis/VIN number
  • Engine number
  • License plate number
  • Vehicle make and model
  • Registration details
  • Date and location of theft
  • Your contact email
  • Police report number (if available)

Will I be notified if someone searches for my vehicle?

Yes, if you opt-in when reporting your vehicle. You'll receive an email notification whenever someone searches for your vehicle in our database, which might help in its recovery.

How do I remove my vehicle from the database if it's recovered?

Go to the "Delete Entry" page, enter your vehicle's chassis number, and follow the verification process. You'll receive an email with a confirmation link to remove the listing.

Can I use StolenMotorJA on my mobile phone?

Yes, our website is fully mobile-responsive and works on all devices including smartphones and tablets. You can check, report, and manage vehicle listings from any device with internet access.

Is my data secure?

Yes, we take data security seriously. We use encryption for sensitive information and never share your personal data with third parties except when required by law. For more information, please read our Data Privacy Statement.
